The terms free radicals, antioxidants, glutathione peroxidase, superoxides, superoxide dismutase, oxidants, and lipid peroxy radicals sound foreign and complex. What do they really have to do with health? In the next few posts I will attempt to break down and guide you through this terminology.

To begin with you may have heard that these words have to do with causing cancer, heart disease, cataracts, macular degeneration, premature aging, suppressing the immune system, Parkinson’s, arthritis, male infertility, multiple slcerosis, Alzheimer’s, and autoimmune diseases.

What are free radicals and oxidant particles? The terms are basically interchangeable and describe incomplete and unstable molecules. Molecules are the basic building blocks in nature, such as fatty acids, oxygen, and amino acids. Normal molecules have electrons in pairs, electrons hold molecules together.

Let’s use the oxygen molecule as an example. The oxygen molecule has four pairs of electrons. If the molecule loses one of its electrons it becomes a free radical. A free radical or oxidant particle that has for one reason or another lost an electron  becomes unbalanced and looks to replace the missing electron. It will go so far as to steal an electron from another molecule, injuring or even killing it, which in turn steals an electron from another molecule and so on, damaging more and more cells. Antioxidants come in and neutralize free radicals.

Our bodies produce free radicals all the time as a natural process of our cells using oxygen. There is no problem as long as there is a balance of antioxidants to free radicals in our system. When our bodies fall out of balance there is nothing to stop the hungry charge of free radicals as they seek to replace what they have lost and as a result many enzyme systems are affected.

It is estimated that 80%-90% of all degenerative diseases involve free radical activity. Antioxidants lessen free radical damage. The list is growing daily on the studies which have identified more than 60 health conditions that may be prevented or treated with antioxidant supplementation.

The major antioxidant nutrients are vitamin E, C, and beta-carotene or vitamin A. These antioxidants fight the aging process which happens as a result of free radicals breaking through cell membranes. Once inside they can damage the DNA of the cell causing the cell to malfunction, adversely affecting future generations; possibly even turning them cancerous.

In the next few posts I will explain about antioxidant systems and how these antioxidants can help.

More proof that drug companies should not mess with nature. They are continuously trying to copy nutrients and chemicals found in nature; failing miserably and then blaming the natural compound instead of themselves. Then they tout how dangerous the natural component is simply because their “form” of it became toxic and they could not replicate the safety of the ingredient as found in nature. When drug companies try to synthesize a natural compound to sell for a quick profit, no one wins.

This was the case recently with resveratrol. Resveratrol is a chemical compound found naturally in certain plants. These plants produce it as an antibiotic to fight bacteria and fungi. Researchers found that in its natural form, resveratrol can slow the effects of aging. When a drug company tried to synthesize this compound they failed to create a safe product.

Here is what Professor Chaney has to say about it:

Tips From The Professor: The “Resveratrol” Drug Is Not Resveratrol

Some of you have been asking about the May 4th 2010 announcement by GlaxoSmithKline that they were suspending a clinical trial of their resveratrol drug because of safety concerns.

Some of the articles went so far to say that people should be cautious about taking resveratrol supplements until these safety issues had been resolved.

Let me make this perfectly clear! The “resveratrol” drug referred to in these articles is not resveratrol itself!

But let’s start at the beginning.

The story started when scientists at Harvard screened over 500,000 chemicals to find which would be most effective at turning on anti-aging genes.

They were looking for a drug that they could patent and sell to a drug company for big bucks – not a naturally occurring botanical nutrient.

But what they found was that resveratrol, a nutrient that is found naturally in red wine, was the most effective compound out of those 500,000 that they screened at turning on the anti-aging genes.

That was great news for those of you who are using resveratrol supplements, but it was bad news for them because they couldn’t patent it and, therefore, couldn’t sell it to a drug company.

But all was not lost. There is a time-tested process for dealing with this dilemma.

You just make a chemically modified derivative of the natural compound and, if it works, you patent the chemical derivative and sell it to a drug company.

So that’s what the scientists at Harvard did. They made a chemical derivative of resveratrol called SRT501, showed that it also turned on the anti-aging genes, patented it and sold it to Sirtris Pharmaceuticals for $500 million. Sirtris, in turn, sold it to GlaxoSmithKline for $720 million.

As I said, this is a frequently used process. Many successful drugs have been obtained this way, but the process is also fraught with perils.

The problem is that the chemically modified derivative is often not metabolized in the same way as the original and frequently can be toxic in unexpected ways.

In fact, the failure rate for this process is quite high. Most of the chemical derivatives fail during clinical trials for one reason or another. It is only on a very rare occasion that these chemically modified derivatives make it through clinical trials and become a successful drug.

Thus, it is perhaps not surprising that SRT501 displayed unexpected toxicity that caused GlaxoSmithKline to halt clinical trials of the drug.

But, SRT501 is not resveratrol and the toxicities of this drug have nothing to do with resveratrol.

Resveratrol is a completely natural nutrient found in grapes, red wine and other foods. SRT501 is a man-made chemical derivative of resveratrol.

Sometimes it’s not nice to fool with Mother Nature!

Dr. Stephen Chaney, Ph.D. – Breakfast of Champions?
Wednesday, September 16, 2009 at 8:03pm

Many of you have been asking when you will hear about Shaklee’s clinical studies with Vivix. Your wait is over.

At their August 2009 global conference in St. Louis, Missouri, Shaklee released some results from one of their key clinical studies on Vivix.

This was a randomized, placebo controlled clinical study, the most rigorous kind of clinical study.

It was also an independent study performed not by Shaklee, but by scientists at State University of New York at Buffalo.

In short, this was the real deal!

In this study, a group of volunteers consumed a 910 calorie breakfast from Burger King. One half of the group took Vivix immediately after breakfast and the other half took a placebo.

For the group consuming Vivix a key genetic regulator of longevity called Nrf2 (pronounced Nerf 2) increased dramatically within the first 3 hours after the meal. For the placebo group Nrf2 levels actually declined.

If you are feeling a bit under whelmed at the moment, it’s probably because this is the kind of study that
needs a bit of additional explanation before you can fully appreciate it.

Let’s start with the breakfast, which I have somewhat jokingly referred to as the “breakfast of champions”.

You see that Burger King breakfast is loaded with the wrong kinds of fat – saturated fat & trans fat. That’s the kind of fat that clogs your arteries.

Not only does it clog your arteries, but it also causes your arteries to contract dramatically right after the
meal. If those arteries are already clogged from previous high fat meals…You guessed it…It can trigger a heart attack or stroke.

If you’re lucky it could mean a trip to the emergency room. But, the most frequent symptom of heart disease is sudden death – often triggered by that fat laden “Happy Meal”, If you’ll pardon the mixed metaphor.

And it isn’t just Burger King. Almost any fast food meal will do.

Now that I have your attention, let’s talk about the protective effects of antioxidants.

In fact, you may have heard about previous clinical studies showing that supplementation with vitamin E or other antioxidants immediately after the “Happy Meal” can prevent that narrowing of the arteries and perhaps save you from that trip to the emergency room.

You might be asking “What does that have to do with Nrf2 and Vivix?” Be patient, I’m getting there.

You see when we are young, a “Happy Meal” will trigger an increase in Nrf2 which in turn increases production of our body’s own antioxidant defense mechanisms.

Nrf2 also triggers our detoxification pathways so that we can get rid of all of the artificial food additives
and preservatives in that “Happy Meal”.

Nrf2 triggers our immune balance pathways (high fat meals depress the immune system and can also cause inflammatory and autoimmune responses).

Finally, Nrf2 triggers our anti-stress pathways (high fat meals trigger cortisol production, which can
accelerate the aging process) and much, much more.

But when we get older, Nrf2 is no longer triggered by those high fat meals and we lose our natural protective mechanisms. When that happens the aging process, and our risk of heart attack or stroke, is increased by every high fat meal that we consume.

By now you are probably starting to understand why the ability of Vivix to activate the Nrf2 gene is such a big deal.

But, I don’t want you to think of Vivix as simply an antidote to a bad diet. You see Vivix turns on Nrf2 whether you are consuming a high fat meal or not.

Just think how much more beneficial it will be to keep your natural antioxidant defense mechanisms, your
detoxification systems, your immune system, and your anti-stress systems in tip top shape without wasting those resources having to compensate for the effects of a bad diet.

So let me summarize what this study shows:

  • Vivix activates the Nrf2 gene, which is a master
    regulator of longevity.
  • That shows that the dosage of resveratrol and ellagic acid in Vivix is appropriate, that those beneficial polyphenols get into your bloodstream (they are bioavailable) and that they have their intended anti-aging benefits.
  • In short the study shows that Vivix works in real people like you & me.
  • Nrf2, in turn, activates the body’s antioxidant defense mechanisms, detoxification mechanisms, immune balancing mechanisms and anti-stress mechanisms. These are all mechanisms that slow down cellular aging and reduce the risk of degenerative diseases.
  • Vivix can reduce the damage caused by a high fat diet, but will be even more effective at slowing the aging process if used along with a good diet and a lifestyle that includes weight control and exercise.

The study actually shows much more than this, but Shaklee can’t release the other data until the manuscript has been accepted for publication. So stay tuned for even more exciting results in the future.

To your health!

How We Age

The Four Key Mechanisms of Aging

It’s a fact of life. Aging begins long before we can see or feel any changes – at the cellular level. Is cellular aging inevitable? Well, we can’t stop time, but emerging research reveals we may be able to influence these biological aging processes in positive ways. This has to do with how efficiently cells repair and replicate themselves, which affects your health, well-being and the aging process in various ways.

Our bodies face these four key mechanisms of cellular aging:

Also: Vivix Research Study Shows How It Activates Nrf2 Anti-Aging Gene

  1. DNA Damage
Every day, every cell in your body is bombarded by up to a million DNA-damaging assaults. These assaults can damage the cell’s genetic database, creating a “typo” that may compromise cell function and longevity.
  2. Genetic Regulators
Genetic regulators contribute to age-related cellular deterioration by controlling the dynamic balance between damage and repair, including whether a cell will live or not.
  3. Declining Cellular Energy Production
Mitochondria in our cells create energy we can’t live without. As mitochondrial efficiency decreases, cell function declines.
  4. Accumulation of AGE Proteins
Excess accumulation of Advanced Glycation Endproducts (AGE) can cause cellular damage that can compromise cell integrity and longevity.

Anti-Aging Supplement with Antioxidant Nutrition – Is There A Fountain Of Youth?

For centuries explorers have been risking everything in search of a simple and elusive key to staying young forever; a simple way to drink to better health. Well as time went by that desire only grew. So, people have tried everything from foods and plants to disgusting tonics and snake oil formulas in the hope of keeping their youth. Being that there is no one from those times still around who admit to taking them, I’d say they did not work. The promise of youth was enough for people to break out the piggy banks and fork over whatever they could; the people selling those products knew they did not work. I am reminded of the movie Pete’s Dragon when the snake oil salesman came into town talking up his wares with fancy words; he knew how to sell what he had.

What about the real world? Scientists have been looking into our bodies for years and have come up with some pretty amazing discoveries; cellular research and understanding how our bodies work has come a long way since the beginning. We have heard that nutrition supplements don’t have much effect on our bodies and that we need to rely instead on prescription drugs and surgeries. With health care being battered around in Congress, talk of preventative medicine is coming forward, however there are still many uniformed and downright dishonest people in academia and political communities.

The body runs like a car, if the fluids are low or not there, or parts are not working properly you will have trouble with performance and things will begin to corrode. For years certain companies and individuals have been working hard to see if there really is a way to retard aging with natural means like nutrition, supplements and the like. Prof. Zs-Nagy, MD says that in its 16 year history the anti-aging medical movement and medicine has garnered the backing of over 100,000 physicians and scientists worldwide who are involved with life extending and enhancing research and interventions. Meaning that, clearly, there is some meat to this bone.

So what has the research found? Not only do our bodies need our help in staying healthy they need us to be aware of what is going on. Let’s face it, the food we eat is important, but what is it about the food we eat that makes it that way? The nutrients our bodies glean from the polyphenols, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, trace minerals and other helpers give us energy and vitality.

After age 25 our bodies begin to produce less of certain hormones which hinder the natural defenses and increases our body’s age. Resveratrol working with certain polyphenols can effectively support and slow the 4 signs of aging our bodies go through. A recent breakthrough study, part of which was released, revealed that people who took a certain brand name of supplements over the course of 20 years or more did not have the chronic problems and need to take prescription drugs than those who took generic supplements or none at all had.

Despite the naysayers and those in support of anti-aging and nutrition supplements, and studies aside, our common sense should tell us that what we put in has a direct result of what we get out. Baked beans and coffee anyone? Not if I’m going be in a crowded, unventilated room. Cause and effect; what we do in our daily lives effects how we feel. Look for the most natural products that actually get to where they need to be; some supplements come out looking as they did in the bottle. Giving back the nutrients our bodies lose through working and aging can help us live longer and better.

Shaklee has been working for over 50 years to find the best and most natural products to enhance our health and well being. Vivix® Cellular Anti-Aging Tonic is a revolutionary breakthrough dietary supplement in the fight against cellular aging.  Developed after years of research by Shaklee Corporation, the number one natural nutrition company in the U.S., Vivix is the world’s best anti-aging supplement.  In laboratory studies, Vivix ingredients have been shown to impact the four key mechanisms of cellular aging.*  In addition Vivix supports heart and cardiovascular function, enhanced immunity and joint function, promotes cellular longevity and energy, provides antioxidant support and other important functions.

Now, it is not just Shaklee who says we can stop the cycle of having to take drugs that are going to make us glow in the dark and feel worse than if we were not on them. Dr. Imre Zs.-Nagy, MD, A4M Infinity Award Winner 2009, is sounding an alarm across the gerontological establishment going so far as to expose the covert misdeeds and extreme abuse of academic and political power by the said establishment. In the 2009 May/June issue of the Archives of Gerontology and Geriatrics,* he claims for the past 14 years the gerontological establishment has sought to persecute anti-aging physicians, anti-aging health practitioners, and the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (A4M; www.worldhealth.net), simply because they defy the prevailing model of disease-based, drug-oriented medicine. He believes it is possible that we can combat aging. Here is a little of what he has to say.

In asking “Is consensus in anti-aging medical intervention an elusive expectation or a realistic goal?,” Prof. Zs-Nagy, MD, concludes that, “There has been little else as dramatic, important, beneficial, and significant as the anti-aging medical movement… anti-aging medicine has flourished in its sixteen-year long history, garnering the support of more than 100,000 physicians and scientists worldwide who practice or research life enhancing, life extending interventions.” Prof. Imre Zs-Nagy, MD, a part of the gerontology movement for four decades, and founder and editor-in-chief of the Archives of Gerontology and Geriatrics has courageously stepped up to speak the truth.

So the fountain of youth has taken on a different form and a better flavor. Vivix is made from a remarkable super grape, known as Vitis rotundifolia. This is the only grape found in nature with an extra chromosome, which scientists believe greatly enhances its polyphenol profile and potential health benefits.* In collaboration with scientists from the University of Georgia, Shaklee scientists employed a bioassay-guided process, which resulted in a patent-pending super grape extract with ellagic acid, a polyphenol not found in ordinary grapes. Ellagic acid is thought to be responsible for many of the unique cellular anti-aging actions of the super grape in the Vivix formulation.*

This gives us the purest and most potent natural resveratrol. In fact, this extract’s resveratrol content is no less than 98%, and the amount of resveratrol found in Vivix is guided by the latest scientific studies and emerging research. In addition, the Shaklee patent-pending extract supplies other potent polyphenols affecting cellular longevity pathways, such as phenolic acids, ellagitannins, anthocyanins, and proanthocyanidins.*

Vivix Polyphenols Have Been Shown to:

  • Effectively help protect and repair cellular DNA.
  • Positively impact genetic regulators, which help turn down cellular aging.
  • Promote mitochondrial biogenesis, which helps increase power production within the cells.
  • Are 10xs more powerful than resveratrol in slowing the formation of AGE proteins that gradually can clog up cells

In addition, Vivix also:*

  • Supports heart health and cardiovascular function
  • Supports brain health
  • Supports enhanced immunity function
  • Supports joint function
  • Promotes cellular longevity
  • Increases cellular energy
  • Promotes good health and well being
  • Provides antioxidant support

Vivix ingredients are all natural:

  • No artificial colors
  • No artificial flavors
  • No artificial sweeteners
  • No preservatives

This preliminary release of an independent study of how Vivix activates the Nrf2 anti-aging gene and fights high fat diets and stressful lives demonstrates the effectiveness of Vivix, an anti-cellular aging tonic. I thought it would be best to let the good Dr. Chaney’s analysis stand by itself and add a few thoughts and comments.

Now we all are bombarded with ways to eat healthy and live longer. What if there was a real and tangible way that can be accomplished inside our bodies? Eating right and exercise are important in staying healthy but there is something that goes right along with healthy living.

This next part of my article is a study of Vivix by scientists outside of the company that makes it. What they found is astounding, and I think the information is better served by allowing it to speak for itself.

Subject: Dr. Chaney Vivix study and Nrf2!

Many of you have been asking when you will hear about Shaklee’s clinical studies with Vivix. Your wait is over.
